  1. At Wagner College, i had learned many things about Port Richmond areas. I learned that food at Port Richmond areas are much more inexpensive than those at Wagner's. It was very intresting and great how they had showed and explained their presentations.I learned alot about the area around Port Richmond and Wagner. Also the big differences between prices, the ethnic and racial caomparison and restaurants they had vistited. Another thing i had learned and heard from my classmates and those presentaions are the negatives and postives of Port Richmond areas, such as the polluted area with piled up garbage, the inexpensive food and how deli's and grocery stores were close from each other that driving sometims are unnecessary. I also enjoyed the performance "Waiting for Lefty", it was great to experience it up close to you and having a cask sit next to you.

  2. During the past two or so weeks our Port Richmond, A.P. World, class has been working with Wagner College students on a collaborative project. Our classes have been asked to study the difference of life between the Port Richmond High School area and the Wagner College area.
The following is recorded as my findings from both exploration and our powerpoint projects.
The area of Port Richmond is very different from the Wagner College area. Here in Port Richmond there are many families below the poverty line, 24.1% to be exact. Port Richmond's population as of 2000 is 62,800 people, 31% of them are children 0-17, Staten Island has 25% 0-17, and New York City has 24% 0-17.
Port richmond also has very low Income rates. Income rates in Port Richmond are around $43,118 median. In New York the income is $38,293 median and nationally, $44,512. Also, I found that people in Port Richmond are much more willing to help, than the people in the Wagner area. I live in Port Richmond and the most likely reason that people are more helpful is because all of Port Richmond's citizens are just barely making enough money to pay the bills, and because of that we all just band together to help each other through each day. Even my family is struggling and our neighbors help out whenever they can, so we're more likely to help someone. Port Richmond, in my opinion, is more or less like America, we too follow the motto "United we Stand, Divided we Fall."
In Grymes Hill I found that about 7% of the population is below the poverty line. The total Population in Grymes Hill is only 8,709 people, a 54,091 person difference. The percentage of children 0-17 in Grymes hill is only 23%, 11% less than Port Richmond. I think that the reason people aren't as helpful in Grymes Hill is because they have more people able to easily pay the bills.Another reson could be because really in Grymes Hill, you only know your neighbors, in Port Richmond you probably know more people because of how many delis and stores there are, causing you to maybe say hello to people and get to know them better, Port Richmond avenue is flooded with Convienient Stores whereas Grymes Hill doesn't have too many.
After we had our "Town Hall" meeting our groups went to see the play "Waiting for Lefty" Waiting for Lefty is more or less related to our times because (1) in Lefty's time and our time we are both struggling with the economy, and (2) the fact that the actors were stressed out from work is close to what happens everyday now. I enjoyed Waiting for Lefty too, and I noticed that many of the actors really got into character. Waiting for Lefty was a very profound and inspiring play and it almost made me feel as if I should go out and "STRIKE!"

  3. I felt that the Wagner College experience was a very interesting and very fun! Wagner college is a beautiful college with a good education. I loved comparing with my group how each area is different. I wish I can do it again. I like to see the difference between peoples opinion and compare our thoughts. I enjoyed their power point presentations and see their thoughts of Port RIchmond. For the Town Hall Meeting was very interesting and cool because I have never been to one. Therefore I saw that Port RIchmond has a lot of little stores that are delis. I am so thankful that I can have this excellent opportunity. I just want to thank everyone who was involved in this.

  4. When I first heard about this project, having to compare prices, people, houses, stores etc., from Port Richmond to Grymes Hill, i was a little skeptical. My first thought was, "what's the point of doing this, it's all Staten Island, why would anything be different?". I later found out, due to research from my own group and others, that there is a major difference i never could've imagined. The price of one product in Port Richmond is so much cheaper than the same product on Grymes Hill.
A lot of the groups spoke about how the people in Port Richmond are so much nicer and more helpful than the people living on Grymes Hill and i think that's because Port Richmond is a fairly small town that has all of its stores, restaurants and houses so close together that you can't help noticing the same people all the time and getting to know them. During the town hall meeting, most of the groups mentioned only the mexcian restaurants and stores that were in Port Richmond, but those aren't the only places around. There are so many places of all types of heritage that I, and so many more people, go to all the time. The workers are always so friendly and they're constantly trying to give you a great time so that you come back for more. I'm not going to lie, but my favorite place in Port Richmond to go to is Ralph's Ices! There are so many flavors to choose from that it takes me probably about 10 minutes everytime to decide what i want! Unfortunately, Ralph's isn't open during the winter, but when summer finally comes it makes it so much more exciting to know that you could start eating Ralphs again :)
I'm so happy that i was able to do this project and work with the 2 girls that i did. It was such a great learning opportunity and i'll remember for when i get older never to buy the $3 cheese on Grymes Hill and to always buy the one that's $.99 in Port Richmond.=)

  5. During the few weeks that we worked with the Wagner College students I learned a lot. This collaboration opened my eyes to many things including the differences between the Wagner area and the Port Richmond area, the negatives and positives of the area in which I go to school and also a lot about college life. There were some aspects of this project I liked and some I didn’t. But in all I really enjoyed this project and thought it was a success.
During the presentations the college students gave I learned a lot about the difference between the two areas we researched. I found it really interested that the price drops so dramatically in the Port Richmond area. I think the best example of this is that the price of cheese is only 99 cents in Port Richmond but $5.99 in Wagner. That’s a dramatic difference on something as simple as cheese and since they pointed this out I’ve been noticing the price difference in different areas of the island. I also found it interesting that Port Richmond has a lot more buses than Wagner and I really liked how one of the groups made the connection that that could be because of people in Port Richmond not having vehicles to travel in. I don’t think that I would have thought of this and since it was pointed out I think that it may be correct after thinking about it.
During this collaboration I also learned a lot about college life which I enjoyed. I thought college dorms would be bigger but I found that they were really small which surprised me. I liked my college student Alex’s room a lot because the view it had of Manhattan. I couldn’t help but keep looking out the window at it. I also liked that in the dorms everyone seems to be friends and while we were in the dorm room several people came in and out to ask if Alex and his roommate if they wanted to do something. That experience gives me another reason to want to go away to college because I would love to experience that. I think that this part was probably my favorite out of everything we did during the whole study.
The play “Where’s Lefty?” was also very good and I enjoyed it. I didn’t think that it would be that great because it was college students involved but they really surprised me and I liked it very much. I especially liked how the actors and actresses were in the crowd with you because it helped make you feel like you were there. I would really like to experience another play similar to this at some point again in my life.
In the entire project the only negative I found was that it was a very tiring experience especially the night where we went to Wagner. The next day I was exhausted and felt like I was going to fall asleep at any moment. The minute I got home the first thing I wanted to do was go to sleep because I was having trouble keeping my eyes open that night. If not for the play being interesting and waking me up I may have fallen asleep at any moment. I don’t really think there is anything that can be done about this though because for us to go home earlier we would have had to miss the play which was really enjoyable and made the experience more memorable.
In all I think the whole project was a success and a great memory that I don’t think I will forget. Many of the things I learned in this I think will help me later in life in some way or another. I know this experience is something I’m happy that I was a part of and very worth it. I think the positives completely outweigh the negatives and everything was just great. This collaboration in my opinion was well worth all the time and effort.

  6. I enjoyed our trip to Wagner College. I learned so much from all of the college student’s presentations. I learned that prices in the Port Richmond community were drastically cheaper than the prices in the Wagner College community. I suspected that Port Richmond would have cheaper prices than around Wagner college but I did not realize how much cheaper they really were. A package of Kraft American cheese singles was about a dollar in the Port Richmond Delis. While in the Wagner community it was about five dollars. While it appears that Port Richmond has very cheap prices, most people living in the area do not realize this. Many of the people that live in Port Richmond community find the prices expensive and hard to afford. I also learned that the community around Wagner College is much cleaner and neater than the Port community. There is more trash in the streets of Port Richmond. While in Grymes Hill there is barely any trash scattered around. The houses in Grymes Hill were well-maintained while some houses in Port looked very old and appeared as If they have not been taken care of as well. The houses were also spaced out more in Grymes Hill. The houses in Port Richmond were much smaller and closer together.
Another thing I learned was that Port Richmond has a larger number of buses running through the community compared to the Grymes Hill Community. I had never realized it before the night we visited Wagner. I believe this is because not everyone in Port Richmond owns a car. They rely on the buses to get them to work, school and anywhere they need to go! Something pointed out, the night we visited Wagner College was that Port Richmond was much more diverse than Grymes Hill. Port Richmond has African Americans, Mexicans, and Caucasian citizens living there. While Grymes Hill has mostly Caucasian citizens living there. Some people may view this as a positive while others as a negative. I personally believe it is a positive. All different ethnicities come together in one neighborhood helping each other through the tough times we face. We all learn and grow from each other.
While we were at Wagner College we watched the play “Waiting for Lefty.” The play took place during the Great Depression. It portrayed the tough living situation that the people were all in due to the economy. There were many similarities to today’s economic issues. The play was very interesting and the cast interacted with the audience which I think made the play that much better! I think the night I spent at Wagner College taught me so much about a neighborhood I barely knew and a neighborhood I am in everyday! It was a great night and am very happy I was lucky enough to be involved in the connection between Wagner College and Port Richmond High School.

  7. During these weeks of comparing and finding the similar aspects of the Port Richmond area and the Clove road area helped me with a joyful experience. I realized the differences between each neighborhood and some certain similarities.
The difference between the two communities is certain products in the clove road section are expensive. Cheese would cost $5.69 but in Port Richmond it would cost $0.99. There are not many Busses that run over the clove road area because some people commute use there car or car pooling. I also learned that there are Restaurants where you have to come in dressed up and will spend a lot of money. I found it interesting and I wasn’t used to that. We saw presentations and pictures of there Restaurants and there parks. There are a lot of grassy areas with many trees. When I was with the people in my group they took us to there dorms Located in the “Harbor View Section.” There I found a beautiful site of Manhattan and the water. Especially the view when it got dark of the Verrazano Bridge in full lighting.
I also learned the negatives of the Port Richmond area while I learned the positive and negative affects of the Clove road area. After that, we went to see a play based on the Great Depression and how it affected people’s Life. It was Called “Waiting For lefty”. I loved it I never been to a play where the actors very involved in the audience with us. I loved how they would Jump out of various places and start running. I felt the experience of when a character was sitting behind my friends and me and ran onto the stage, startling us with excitement. I love and enjoyed this experience and the tours. I would love to experience this again. I had a wonderful time with the Wagner Collage Students. They were all friendly and basically fun to hang with.

  8. My experiences working with the Wagner College students was incredibly more productive than I originally expected. My first thoughts when hearing about this project are nothing like my view on this collaboration now. I don't live in either Port Richmond or Grymes Hill, but by doing this project, I learned a lot about both neighborhoods, and how different two areas in the same city really are. Never in a million years did I think the price of something as simple as cheese could have practically a $5 price difference in two very unique areas. During the presentations of the college students tended to bring out mostly the negatives of where we go to school, and where some of us live. I think for most of them, the neighborhood of Port Richmond is incredibly different from where any of them came from before coming to Wagner, including the ones from Staten Island. Port Richmond is a much smaller town than Grymes Hill, and most people who live there know each other already. I don't think the people in either area or nicer or more friendly. I think more people are willing to help in Port Richmond because the majority of families know each other, and be willing to help their close friends and neighbors. Their are a considerably larger number of houses on Grymes Hill, and therefore, there's no way everybody who lives there can know everyone else.
Aside from the project aspect of this collaboration, meeting the college students in my group was another great experience. Vanessa was more then willing to welcome all of us into her tiny dorm room. Both her and Antonia shared many interesting facts about college life with us that surprised and intrigued me. Our group had a really great time both times we met, and we made the boring parts of our project more fun.
All in all, I think this collaboration was very beneficial, but more so to the Wagner students. The majority of them never experienced a town like Port Richmond. For them to get the feel of how the people there live, and shop, and go through their normal routines, must've been incredibly eye opening. To see how different life is on two different sides of one small city is a new and exciting experience for everyone. From my perspective, it helped show someone who comes to Port Richmond everyday for school, and also where I used to go to CCD every week, how a couple of blocks or miles or streets can make people from the same city totally different from one another. And also how completely unique all of our lives are. It made me realize that despite the fact we're all from the same place, it doesn't mean our lives are the same. This project really was worth the time we spent on it, and put into it.

  9. During A.P. world we have had a caliboration of Wagner College feshmen and Port Richmond fresmen. We had to help to inform the Wagner students about Port Richmond. My wagner students Dosher and Derek were very kind and said we had helped them very much. During our time speaking we had figured out that both the Port Richmond and Wagner are are very diversed and that Port Richmonds food and supplies are very cheaper then Wagners area. I also learned that port richmond is pretty dirty with old houses and Grymes Hill houses were cleaner and spread out more. While we were at Wagner College we had all bonded and we saw the dorms, classrooms, library, gym where they have a giant swimming pool, library, and the cafeteria. We bonded even more over pizza and drinks. Every Wagner and Portrichmond group had a good presentation and i learned many things. That familys are below and above the poverty line and that peolpe in Port Richmond are making a lower income then poeple in Grymes Hill. That 88 % of Port Richmond has jobs and 99% of Grymes Hill is emoloyed. We also saw the show in Wagners theatre called "Waiting for Lefty" it involves how people were in the Great Depression and how they were making low money and how they were going through hard times and some through relationship problems and for this they all wanted to go on srike and for saying they wanted to go on strike they were called reds. There were also bad guys who tryed to refuse the strike. Also it was fun when u had members of the cast yelling and screaming from the audience during the play its the first time I have seen actors interact with the audience before. Well my experience with the Wagner Colege kids was fun and I enjoyed it and it is an experience I will never forget and I wish I could do it again.

  10. The Wagner college experience realy opend my eyes to the differences between the area Port Richmond and Grymshill. I never realized how big Port Richmond actually is untill this project. when comparing houses, prices, ethnic groups, ect. i realized how different GrymsHill is compared to Port Richmond. Port richmond has alot of blck/hispanic people and grymshill is mostly caucasion and italian. the prices are amazingly very different to, for example a pack of cheese in Port is 99 cents in grymshill it around $4.

I loved going to Wgner college. it was so much fun and the campus was beautiful. my group and i got a full tour of the colleges campus. we saw the dorm rooms and the important building located in Wagner. after our tour we got pizza and got to see what the Wagner studenbts thought of Port Richmond. alot of their comments were positive but they alos had a lot of negative things to say,for exaple one girl said she wasnt welocm in a resturant and they asked her to leave because she wanted a menu. one of the good comments i heard over and over agene was that "the people in the neighborhood are friendly" which is true.. not all of them but most are. after the "town hall meeting" we got to see a play called "finding lefty". the play was amazing. the seats were upclose..almost on set and some of the people in the play were sitting in the crowd. it was only 50 min. long but i enjoyed it. after ten play we got to speak to the cast. i had alot of fun and i hope we get to have another expirence like this. =]

  11. Working with the Wagner College Freshman students was a great experience and opportunity. I found out information about the Port Richmond area and the Wagner area. We compared prices of items and the neighborhood in both areas. We found that prices in Port Richmond were much cheaper. For example: A pack of Kraft cheese in Port Richmond was a little over a dollar. The same pack of Kraft cheese in the Wagner area was about five dollars. Prices in Port Richmond are obviously cheaper. There were some major differences in both neighborhoods. There were differences in the population, people who were employed, pollution, schools, transportation etc.
When we visited Wagner College it was really nice. We got a tour of the Wagner campus. They had a pool, a gym, a library, a cafeteria, and all of these buildings. After the tour, we were given cookies, juice, and pizza. The college students showed us their presentations of their part of the project. After they shared their information, we saw a play called "Waiting for Lefty". It took place in the 1930s during the Great Depression. People were having a hard time holding on to their jobs and making money. It was kind of what America is going through today with the recession. The play was very active and realistic. There was no stage. The play was literally right in front of you. Some of the actors were actually in the audience. It really made you feel like you were part of the play as well. When the play was over, the actors asked the audience some questions about the play and the project we're working on. It was a great experience going to Wagner college. It was a really fun night and I'm glad I was able to be there.

I found this collobration between Wagner College and Port Richmond High School to be very informative. It made me realize many differences and similarities between the 2 neighborhoods.
One difference that was very noticeable was that the prices at the stores differed greatly. The price for Kraft cheese was $0.99 in Port Richmond but $5.69 near Wagner College. I thought that the food would be similarly priced, considering that Pathmark's prices were fairly high. I didn't think that the prices needed to be THAT much more affordable to the residents of Port Richmond. Also, another observation was that the restaurants in Port Richmond were near the stores, making the food in the restaurants reasonably priced and fresh.
Another difference was that Port Richmond has more spread out transportation. Near Wagner College, the buses are concentrated onto Victory Boulevard and Clove Road. However, in Port Richmond, there are buses along Richmond Terrace, Forest Avenue, Port Richmond Avenue, Castleton Avenue, Post Avenue, and several other streets, meaning that you are always within a few blocks of a bus stop. I didn't think that the people near Wagner College used their cars that much.
Another difference between the 2 neighborhoods was the condition of the streets. Near Wagner College, the streets are all well-paved and are litter-free. However, in Port Richmond, the streets have more trash. Relative to this, from my research, Port Richmond has a greater population density, due mostly to the fact that there are often 2 or more families per house. Another issue is that the houses in Port Richmond are older and not as well maintained as the houses near Wagner College. This is partially due to the fact that Port Richmond is the oldest neighborhood in Staen Island, but also due to the fact that the residents most likely don't have the money for house repairs.
Another difference is that the people near Wagner College make way more than the people in Port Richmond, with the average income being about $73,000 per year. With one student's presentation, he mentioned the salary was about $22,000 per year with one parent unemployed. Another group mentioned the income at about $45,000 per houshold. Still, those figures are nowhere near $73,000.
Some similarities between the 2 neighborhoods are that a similar percentage of people are employed (88% in Port Richmond compared to 91% near Wagner College) and a similar percentage of people were living in poverty (16% in Port Rcihmond compared to 17% near Wagner College), though those numbers don't tell exactly how far under the poverty line.
In addition to those negative aspects, there are also some positive aspects of Port Richmond. For example, as stated before, it is easier to get around by public transportation. The people are much less caring about the way you looked, because they didn't care how they looked. One group says that they saw people shopping in pajama bottoms.
Another positive aspect of Port Richmond is that the ethnic composition is more ethnic. There are many Hispanics and African-Americans in Port Richmond, in addition to some white people, so that nobody stands out because of their race and people are more accepting of other people. Near Wagner College, however, there are mostly white people, making people of a different ethnic backround more uncomfortable.
Another positive aspect of Port Richmond is that people are more helpful than near Wagner College. From past experience, people have been happy to tell me where the bus stops to get to a certain place, or which direction a certain landmark is.
After we had the discussion, we saw the play, ''Waiting for Lefty'', which was appropriate because of today's economy and the fact that much of the discussion was the economic comparison between the 2 neighborhoods. The play was fun to watch because it was a few feet away from me and the cast members were in the audience. At some points, the cast members were next to me!
All in all, it was a very fun and educational night.

  14. Having the opportunity to this project with the Wagner College students was great. I actually learned a lot. I also learned a lot about Port Richmond that I didn't know about. For example I didn't know that people were so friendly. I just figured people were mean. Then again I don't get out very often. I also learned what it was like around Wagner College. I just figured that people around this area were a little more friendly. The things I didn't find surprising was the prices. Around Port Richmond things were a lot cheaper than anything from around Wagner College.
After most of the presentations were seen were invited to go to a play. It was called " Where's Lefty". I really enjoyed this play. The actors and actres were very convincing. I was also very surprised at how good they were. During the play, there were times where I felt like I was really experiencing what people did back then. While watching this play, I really realized how bad it was back then.
I think this was a wonderful experience. I really appreciate all the hard work these teachers put in. I'm really glad I was part of this because I really think I learned a lot. I also liked the tour of the college. I thought that was really exciting. Any way I know I am only in my first year of high school, but I am really considering attending Wagner College.
I found this project very fun because it gave us the opportunity to learn and meet new people. My partners Marie and V were the best. They were very kind to me and my group Sandie, Susan, and Melodie. I think we made a great team.

  15. I had fun working with the Wagner College freshman's. This is because I dont live in the area of Port Richmond, so I was able to learn about the neighborhood where I go to school, and the neighborhood were most of the people who attend Port Rchmond High School with me live. In this experience I was also able to learn about the neibghborhood of were Wagner College is located and about the People who lived there. I also found out that Port Richmond would be a better place to buy food items because they are much less expensive then buying items at Clove Road or Grymes Hill.

  16. The Wagner College project was a very enjoyable and learning experience for me. I never knew all of the differences between Gyrmes Hill and Port Richmond. One of the things that really shocked me were the differences in prices. I couldn't believe that the cheese in Grymes Hill was three to four dollars more than the same cheese in Port Richmond. The Wagner students pointed out other differences too. The elasticities in Port Richmond are greater than on Grymes Hill. Some of the houses in Port Richmond are quite big and old. There are usually more than one family in each house. The houses on Grymes Hill were also big but, of course for a different reason. Port Richmond is a small neighborhood with many stores, and delis. Grymes Hill has stores too but, they aren't the same. Also, in Port Richmond I tend to see more people outside than in Grymes Hill. Some Wagner students said that most people in Port Richmond take the bus, which is very believable because the bus is always packed! I attend Port Richmond High School everyday and, I absolutely love it! After school most kids either go to John's Famous Deli or, my personal favorite Ralph's Ices.
I had never had a tour of Wagner College before so, I was really looking forward to getting a glimpse of college life. I was lucky enough to work with two girls from the college, Jen and Corey. Corey gave me a tour of Wagner College at first and, showed me where some of her classes were. Then, I saw Jen's dorm. I thought the dorms were really cool and, I was really happy that I got to see one. After I saw the dorms, they took my partner and I around Wagner College for another tour. They showed us the pool, the gym, the room were girls take yoga, the school store, and the cafeteria. Then, we met up with all the other students for pizza and the PowerPoint presentations. I thought the presentations were very organized and informative. You can tell that the Wagner students really worked hard. After the presentations we all went to see a Wagner play called "Waiting for Lefty". This was the first Wagner play I had ever seen and, it was great! The play was about The Great Depression and, the impact it had on people's lives. I thought this play was very good and the actors were amazing. The actors were in character from the very beginning to the very end. I always learned about The Great Depression in school but, they never really teach you how much people suffered emotionally. This play was so interesting I actually felt like I was one of the people in the union.
In the end I believe that this project was a great experience for not only the Port Richmond students but, also for the Wagner College students. Some of the students at Wagner College have either grown up in another city and, have never seen a place like Port Richmond or, they have lived in Staten Island but never have been to Port Richmond. I think this experience was eye opening for everyone. I don't live in Port Richmond or Grymes Hill but I was fascinated to learn all about the similarities and differences in both neighborhoods.

  17. The two areas of port richmond and wagner are two different areas. The Wagner area ia quiet place were there is large population. There is one main ethnic group in the wagner area compared tho port richmond, Wagner is mostly white. In port richmond the ethnic groups are latino and black and very little white. About 30 years ago port richmond was a white area but over the years the whites all moved away and the latinos and blacks started movind into the neighborhood.
The streets in port richmond are all torn up and are full of litter. When you drive down the streets you are always hitting a pothole and after you hit the pothole you get stuck at all the lights. All the lights are out of sync. You would get through one light an and then the next light which is less thatn 100 feet away you get stuck at. Its a pain to wait at the lights espically when you're in a hurry to get somewhere. When you go to the wagner area the streets are all well paved they are stright and flat. There is not a singal piece of trash on the street or sidewalks. All the street lights are basically in sync and if there isnt a street light there is stop sign at every intersection.
The houses over in port richmond are mainly apartment houses and small houses. These houses are in poor condition on the outside and in certain houses on the inside too. The housing in the wagner area are nice clean and kinda big but there are also some houses that are like the ones in port richmond.
In port richmond there are many delis and one super market. The prices in port richmond compared to the prics in the stores by wagner are cheap and affordable. In a store in port richmond you would pay 2.00 - 5.00 dollars for a lb of cheese, but in the stores by wagner you would pay anywhere from 6.00- 8.00 dollars for a lb of cheese. I think thats pretty expensive for 1 lb of cheese.
In port richmond there is a couple of resturants. One resturant is Deninos Pizzaria and resturant. In deninos you could pay 12.00 dollars for one plain pizza pie. If you want toppings its anywhere from .50 cents to 1.00 dollar depending on the topping. The other resturant is Brothers Pizzaria. Brothers is a very expensive place. If you want to get a pizza there you can pay up to 15.00 dollars for a plain round pizza with no topping. Toppings there are go anywhere from 1.00- 2.00. After you eat dinner at any of these resturants you can go to Ralphs Italian Ices. Ralphs can be pretty expensive. A large cup of ice is about 2.50 and a small is 1.25. If your going to buy for a group of people, your better off getting quarts of ice and going home and eating it. One quart of ice is 3.50. If you have 5 people in a group and you each buy ices your spending over 10.00 dollars. If you have a group of five people and you get ice your only going to pay 3.50 for 5 people and you can mix and match the flavors.
Even though i did not go to the meeting at Wagner the other doy i heard that it was fun. Everyone got a tour of the school and each student group got to talk about the differences between the two neighborhoods. I heard that waiting for lefty was a good play that the wagner students performed. I heard that the characters wre well thought out and each student acted as if the play was real life. I only wish i could.ve been there i bet i could've had a good time. I wish i could have a good experience just like my classmates.

  18. i was not lucky enough to go to Wagner College with the rest of my classmates but from what i haerd it sounded like a great night. Wganer looks and sounds like a great school. the peaple from wagner that i worked with were really nice. Port Richmond has lower income rates than other parts of the island. there is not many grocery stores in the area so the ones that are are more expensive than other areas. the city should work on building more stores in the area. i really wish i could have experianced this for myself.

  19. This assignment was a great one! Not only did it involve an educational purpose, but it also involved a remarkable conversation, where as everyone contributed their share of information throughout comparisons and valid information. I learned a lot. I never realized it until then that both the Port Richmond and Wagner areas are very different throughout several different aspects. As we saw each demonstration, I realized the expenses of food were rather astonishing. Within the Wagner area, a simple product (let alone the larger items)- such as cheese could could cost up to $6.49 or more. As for the Port Richmond area, cheese can cost only about $2.00 at the least(from the same brand too!). Another topic that was mentioned in many of the demonstrations were the house conditions. It turned out to be that the Port Richmond area contained houses that were in poor condition- they were either very large, but very very crowded or just simply small where some families lived in one room. However, in the Wagner area houses were either large or a two family house, which(compared to Port Richmond) was great news! Another interesting topic that occured to us was the trash ranking! I couldn't believe it! Our area was disgusting compared to Wagner's "perfected" roads and sidewalks! Not to mention our great partners Marie and Ve! I mean-to be honest i thought college students would rather be all too "busy" to actually take highschool students(freshmen) seriously. Wasn't I way off?! Marie and Ve were just great- all of them were! Even the performers in "Waiting For Lefty", were absolutely remarkable! Especially "Doctor Benjamin", I mean if the point she was trying to get across was that everyone plays an important role( whether you were a doctor or a judge or whoever)- that we got to work in unity. Well, then all I have to say is props to Lissa Bak! Props to them all. Everyone acted with so much emotion and spoke with so much EMPHASIS! Which made this play even more utterly amazing! I'm just so glad we had an oppurtunity to experience this- all of us are!!!!!=)

  20. While attending the Port Richmond and Wagner College Collaboration meeting, I learned a lot about Port Richmond that I didn’t know. Living in Westerliegh almost my entire life, I never really was in Port Richmond. Meeting the freshmen’s, Kaycee and Alyssa was really fun, and a great experience. All the presentations were really informative and made me learn more about Port Richmond and what it had to offer. I noticed it was mostly about food. And at first that kind of confused me why they were talking about groceries, and restaurants. But now looking back, it show’s how crazy the price range difference is. In one of the presentations, one of the girls’s said this was most likely because of the area’s household income, which actually makes a lot of sense! After we came from the meeting we went to, "Waiting for Lefty”, a play about the great depression. The actors and actresses were amazing and I actually cried haha! It was really fun and I really hope we get to do something like this again.

  21. This whole experience of collaborating with the Wagner students, has been pretty fun.but I also learned from it. first of all because being that I'm not from Port Richmond I was able to learn more about it and second being I learned about Wagner college neighborhood. It surprised me to learn there were so many differences between the two neighborhoods.but overall it was a good experience. I thought it was really cool that both us Port kids and the Wagner people were freshmen at our schools, because we both are new to our environments.I was sad to miss the trip to the Wagner campus but I'm happy to have been a part of this.
Differences like transportation, pricing of foods, and food products and others were there. There were also differences when it came to the average yearly household income and when it came to racial percentages.

  22. I had a really great time at Wagner College on October 1st. I really enjoyed everything and I hope my other classmates in AP World History did too. The 2 nice young adults who I, Judy and Kathleen had been assigned to were Doscher Hobler and Derek Rubenstein. They were extremely kind to the 3 of us and gave us a tour around their campus. I was really excited for everything and I was pretty darn amazed at everything I saw for some odd reason. The library was huge and it looked just like a public one. The dorms were decent sizes and everyone was friendly. I really liked the gymnasium where I graduated from I.S.72. When I saw the pool, I was thrilled out of no where. It wasn’t small but it wasn’t huge. I also liked the dance studio where I told Judy since she takes ballet. The worst part about the tour was just all the walking. There was just one huge hill that I did not like quite much. Otherwise, the campus was enjoyable to observe.
I also learned many things I did not know about Port Richmond before like how the things were much cheaper here than it is on Grymes Hill and around the college area. Since we have nice people, and fresh cheap food, why doesn’t the state try to fix the pollution on our area? I think that is one of the problems around our area. People also tend to judge our place because most of the populations of the ethnicities are Hispanic and black.
I really liked the presentations made by the freshmans. I was upset about the negativity on the things I learned about Port Richmond but it was just the start of my realization on things like how much of a difference the food costs from both places. The cheese in our school area is only $0.99 while it is about $5.00 on Grymes Hill. That is one ENORMOUS difference. Another thing is the pollution on the streets of Port Richmond. It is disgusting and there is a lot of garbage while in the area of Wagner, it is cleaned daily with no garbage in the places. I think the state should help our area with the pollution. In addition to these things were the incomes of each family, poverty line, etc. There was a bit of difference in both areas.
The positive stuff I liked. The foods in our region were very fresh with good food. Also, one of the presentations someone claimed the people were very helpful. A young lady during the town hall meeting claimed that the people were on the bus helped her when she was lost. I like the fact that the people are helpful. Furthermore, the transportation is excellent. We have many bus stops; they’re probably on every block! Getting around is great because of the bus. I want to back this up by the map at the presentation the young man had shown. The map was a picture of Richmond town with yellow dots indicating the bus stops which there were many of them. While on the other hand, there weren’t much on Grymes hill.
As for the collaboration improvements, I don’t think we need much to improve because I thought Wednesday was perfectly okay. I just think that my classmates and I should have put more into the conversation during the town hall, since we knew Port Richmond town more and that might have helped the Wagner College students a bit more. Otherwise, the collaboration went very well.
I must say my favorite part was the play on "Waiting for Lefty." I learned a lot from that play and it was beyond interesting. The audience was so into the act because some cast members were also in the audience. They did an amazing job with the acting. It was just so real. I would love to see another play by those cast members again.
This opportunity was lovely. I learned a lot and I enjoyed everything. I hope the Wagner students will continue the effort in their College years. If I haven't say so on Wednesday, I'd like to say thanks Doscher and Derek! :) You guys were really cool and nice. I'd also like to say thanks Wagner College for us helping your freshman’s and for us come to your school :]

  23. Recently our class in AP World History went to wagner college to discuss the differences between our two school areas.During the cultivating experience we toured the school.I learned things about both areas that i never knew. i also met some of the very intelligent and observant students at Wagner. This experience opened my eyes on the differences of areas on a very small scale.
What i mean by this is that this experiment is present on every level from country to country from home to home or in our situation from neighborhood to neighborhood. it Was a wonderful learning experience and had many perks along the way. I was able to tour the College and see everything they had there it was very beneficial. I was pleased with everything there and the play at the end just topped off a great night at Wagner College.

  24. I was very grateful to be apart of the Wagner College and Port Richmond H.S. collaboration project. I learned a lot of things about the Grymes Hills and Port Richmond sections of Staten Island. When my teacher first told me about this project I thought it was going to be boring but it turned out great. I thought that the college students wouldn't want to work with little freshmen from H.S. It turned out very diffrently because they were very open minded and was ready to listen to anything we had to say. When we actually attended Wagner College i had fun.We met up with our group and the college students took us for a tour around the campus. The campus was very nice. After the tour we ate pizza and watched the presentations that they did about the two differnt communities. All of their presentations were very similar and they all said basicaly the same thing. They showed the differnce between the two communities economically and income wise. After watching the presentations we saw the play "Waiting For Lefty". It was a a very nice play. It spoke about the great depression and showed the similarities of the economy from back then and from now. This experience was a really niceone and would love to do this again with a different college.

  25. These past view weeks have been really fun with the Wagner College freshman. When I went to meet my partners at the college, they were great tour guides. The room had a perfect view of the city and the water. The presentations were very good and I learned a lot about the Port Richmond area and the Wagner College area. The Port Richmond area has cheaper food than the Wagner College area. It was an estimate of five dollars extra for the food in the Wagner College area. Also, there was the negativity of the Port Richmond area like how there is a lot of garbage lying around. I enjoyed the play "Waiting for Lefty". I was confused about some parts, but I had a great time anyway.

  26. When first told of the collaboration between Port Richmond and Wagner Freshman, I was unsure of the purpose and benefits of it. My first thoughts were ‘I don’t live in Port Richmond, and I don’t live near Wagner, so why do I need to learn more about either area?’ I soon learned that this was the wrong way to look at it, and that there was a great importance in what I was about to take part in.
This revelation began on our first encounter with our Wagner partners. After we were put into groups, we sat down, greeted each other, and discussed what questions we were to answer about our neighborhoods. Through our brief introductions, I could see both groups of students were getting along and that we had something in common. This was the first hint that I would get something out of this experience. Before the end of our meet, we exchanged information so we could stay in touch. We would meet each other again when they would show us around their school and we would watch a play. This is the one part of the experience that I was sure I would enjoy from the start.
The day finally came for us to be shown around Wagner and see a play, and I was glad of its arrival. When I walked to the front entrance, I got to see the college and was immediately amazed at the architectural features of the main building, the park like look of the grounds, and the openness of the school. Then after a short delay, we met up with our group members and took off on our tour.
On the tour, we mainly saw the dorms and the rooms that our group members stayed in. I could see that each room was personalized and arranged like you would expect a bedroom to look like. Once we were all gathered again, we had pizza and other snacks. A few groups presented a slide show on what they found on their research, and this is what I found to be the most interesting. It wasn’t the comparison that I found to be surprising, but the college student’s opinions on why it was the way it was. Port Richmond, they found, was more polluted, more populated, more diverse, and more culturally influenced then Grymes Hill. This was not a surprise. The Wagner students who presented felt that it was because of the city that Port Richmond residents lived in a not to pretty environment, and it was there poverty that made them obese. I personally think they were just trying to be polite, so I did the same by not saying anything. I don’t live in Port Richmond, so I felt it wasn’t my place to say what I thought, and what I thought was that most residents in Port Richmond don’t pick up after themselves, and that same laziness that mad the area ‘not too pretty’ also made them ‘not to skinny’. Anyways, I found it more amusing then informative when they talked about the large quantities of Mexicans and Mexican food, the cruel bus drivers, and the look of the residents and their homes. A lot of time had passed, and it was time to see the play.
This part of the day has to my favorite. Before I was in the “theatre”, I was being introduced by a very friendly Mr. Fatt, (at least at the time he seemed to be so). I put theatre in quotes because within the first few seconds of the play, I realized I was watching the play on the stage. I found this to be the best theatrical performance I ever saw, mainly because I felt apart of the show. An example of this up close performance was when Mr. Fatt was fighting a foot away from me. The play was shorter then I wished, but it made its point. It took place in the Great Depression, and there were a group of Union members who wanted a strike after unfair treatment and pay. I found the acting to be top notched and the scene to scene changes to be fast and almost unnoticeable. The play was excellent and inspiring, as was the project.

  27. i had a great night at wagner college. I learned so much anout the area of grymes hill. I found amusing some of the experiences of the college students. I learned that there were a lot of diffwerences between port and the grymes hill area. My tour guides showed us the bookstore and where they had most of there classes. Then we went to one of the tour guides rooms and we played halo with sajin, and alvin which we found along the way. We spent most of our time there. Then we went to the play"Waiting for Lefty". The economy talked a lot about the Great Depression. It was a great experience watching the play so close. I felt like i was part of the play. in conclusion i learned how a college student lived a college life.

  28. At my experience at Wagner I realized that Staten Island is very separated from
each other. Though Staten Island is very small compared to other places, allot
of people live very differently and don't even know how the other side lives.
How you can pay 99 cents for cheese and drive a couple of miles and pay 5
    dollars for the same cheese.
?? I met new exciting people such my group partners from Canada who are here on
a basketball scholarship. I also took interest in talking to college freshmen in
the other groups. They all had their own story to tell. I used to think that
Wagner college was just another college on the island that probably only the
people that live here know about. I had no idea that people come for this
college from all over America. Also, each group came up and compared each area.
Clove road is a great area to live in but its not as culturally diverse. The
streets are clean and well paved, the houses are bigger and its mostly white
families.Port Richmond is more diverse. We also saw a fantastic play called
Waiting for Lefty where it talks about the depression in the early 1900's. I
have never been so close to the actors where?I was actually sitting next to them
and it was a great play for a time like this where we can relate to not having
any money and what it can do to our families.
???? Although it was a fun trip it was also a great eye opener for me. Port
Richmond needs clean streets and more police in the area for crime and illegal
immigrants .Poverty is very crucial in this area and we need to do something
about it. The elections are coming up soon and I think they should look at
places like these. Port Richmond is a great place to be in and it should really
get recognized. I also think that clove road should be more diverse. They really
should get the opportunity to experience what it's like to know other people and
learn about other peoples culters which is just one great thing about being in
    port Richmond.
